Jelly Roll Ripples-A New Fat Quarter Shop Quilt Pattern
Hello Hello Hello!
Ok that might be a bit of an overkill but I never really know how to start out so I figured I’d do it with some gusto this time. I’m so excited to share a fabulous new pattern and some “Quilts in the Wild” photos. Recently I had the opportunity to work with Fat Quarter Shop https://www.fatquartershop.com/ on their newest Shortcut Quilt pattern Jelly Roll Ripples.
You guys, I am so in love with this quilt!
I’m sure you can guess by the name that the pattern calls for a Jelly Roll with some background and border fabric. A Jelly Roll is made up of around forty two 2.5″ fabric strips all in the same fabric line. My original plan was to use a brightly colored Jelly Roll I had in my stash to create a fun new quilt in time for spring. After thinking it over I realized my poor hubby was the only person in our family who didn’t have their own quilt handmade by me. So with that in mind I switched gears and decided on a manly version for the hubs.
I found this gorgeous group of Batik fabrics by Me + You for Hoffman Fabrics to use for the Jelly Roll part.
I am not usually a Batik fan but this line is amazing and the texture is SO soft!
I added some Silky Bella Solids in porcelain for the background. I cut it from yardage instead of using a Jelly Roll. I really wanted this quilt to be soft and cuddly and was dying to try the Silky Bella.
For the border I found this fabulous AGF Studio for Art Gallery denim. Remember I was going for masculine and what could be more manly than denim?!
Lastly for the binding I found a coordinating Batik print from the same line in a rich caramel color. It doesn’t look like it’s available at the moment but this is the same print in a different color.
The quilt comes together really quickly and the instructions are clear and concise. That’s one of my favorite parts of FQS patterns. They get right to the point with excellent step by step instructions and clear graphics.
It’s a little bit hard to see in the photo above but I ordered some fun new labels and this was my first chance to use one. I can give you the seller’s contact info if you’d like some of your own.
I straight line quilted horizontal lines 1/4″ inside the bottom edge of each 2″ finished strip. I also stitched 2 lines just outside the center into the border. I used a charcoal colored sheet from Target for the backing after reading of a number of other quilters trying them out recently. I have to say that I loved the ease and convenience of the sheet and did not have one problem quilting with it on my machine. Plus its buttery soft and adds to the overall coziness of the quilt. I think can see myself using them again.
I finished the quilt with my typical glue basted machine binding technique. You can read more about it here http://www.alccreates.com/2018/01/04/glue-basted-quilt-binding-a-quick-tutorial/
We happened to be heading out of town for a quick weekend away recently and I convinced my husband to help out with some “Quilts in the Wild” photos. The setting was perfect with the gorgeous colored Batik fabric! I hadn’t even told him the quilt was for him when we took these photos 🙂 At this point he’s pretty used to my hair-brained photo ideas!
Make sure you head to Fat Quarter Shop to grab the pattern. You can even check out a tutorial they created on YouTube by going to http://www.youtube.com/fatquartershop
